Better Know A District - DC

Far and away the best in the 434 part series so far.

I love when Congresswoman Norton calls Colbert, "A plain vanilla man"

I have no doubt this link will die off quickly so check out the MotherLoad for a permanent link (also better quality)

If You Don't Want Your Children To Go To Hell, You'd Better Beat Them

A New Zealand Christian group has put together a nice little pamplet providing some great tips for beating your children.

My personal favourite is "If the child is still angry after the smack, you have not smacked hard enough". You have to remember if you're going to smack your children that the day will come when they'll be big enough to kick your ass. So make sure that by the time you're done beating them that they're no longer angry with you and some day realize that you were just helping beat the sin out of them.

Another is "Smacking may be a 10-to-15 minute process". I wonder at what pace the spanking occurs if it can last for 10 to 15 minutes. If it's anything like when I was a child, the threat of, " You won't be able to sit down for a week when I'm done with you" would not sound like such a gross exaggeration. I'd imagine if a spanking was administered for 10 to 15 minutes, a threat of, "You'll never walk again when I'm done with you" would also sound pretty accurate.

Ren & Stimpy: The Lost Episodes

John K. lists the contents of the new Ren and Stimpy 2 Disc DVD set that came out yesterday.

INSIDE:
3 Spike episodes
3 never been seen episodes
9 half hours total cartoon product.

Naked girls (by the # 1 cute girl artist-Katie Rice)
The 3 Things
Ralph Bakshi animated
First on screen live animated birth

Lots of supplemental material:
I introduce each cartoon and tell you the back story of how we came up with it. I even thrust my groin a couple times.
Meet the cartoonists-Eddie, Katie, Luke, Vincent, Annmarie, Steve (of Asifa Archives fame!) and Eric Goddamn Bauza himself!

A rare personal appearance by Dave Feiss (creator of Cow and Chicken)

Weird Al live justifies the existence of the set!

Animatics
background paintings
model sheets
storyboards

DVD Times has an almost exhaustive inside look and review of the DVD that if you were any sort of Ren and Stimpy fan back in the early 90's there's no way you wouldn't pick up this DVD once you've read through this article.

There's a great interview with John K. at IGN where he talks about how these episodes came into existince.

They asked me if I had any episodes that were rejected by Nickelodeon, and I said yeah, I've got tons of them. They said make them - make the ones that got rejected - so that's what we did: we took a bunch of stories that we wrote in 1990 and 1991 and produced them in 2003

He also goes into some detail on why he believes Ren and Stimpy seperate themselves from all the other TV animation being produced today. Also worth the read.

Sealab 2021 Season IIII or 4 on DVD Aug. 8th

I was doing a little search on Amazon to see if the Ren & Stimpy - The Lost Episodes was actually in fact lost episodes or a best of compilation of previously released material when I saw a little something that caught my eye in the Customers...Also Bought:

Sealab 2021 for some ridiculous reason is not aired in this country so when a new DVD comes along it's a total surprise as to what you're going to get. In the last season Harry Goz (voice of Captain Murphy) died which hopefully wont result in these epsiodes being total crap. As the new captain is Tornado Shanks (voiced by Michael Goz; Harry's son).

Info is a little light at amazon except for the cast listing which bring a smile to my face just reading.

Harry Goz ...Captain Hazel 'Hank' Murphy (2000-2003)
Erik Estrada ...Marco Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar Diego Garcia Marquez
Bill Lobley ...Jodene Sparks/Various
Brett Butler ...Dr. Quentin Q. Quinn
Kate Miller ...Debbie DuPree
Ellis Henican ...Derek 'Stormy' Waters
Chris Ward ...Hesh Hipplewhite/Various
Michael Goz ...Captain Bellerophon 'Tornado' Shanks (2004-2005)
Angela Gibbs ...Debbie 'Black Debbie' Love (2004-2005)

It's out August 8th.

Also if you're interested the Ren and Stimpy: The Lost Episodes are actually 9 new episodes that we're produced for Spike TV in 2003. Pulled by Spike 4 of these episode never aired.

Word of the Day - SCABROUS

Is it just me or do you think movie reviewers read each other movie reviewer's work before writing their own. How else could you explain that at Rotten Tomatoes of the 6 reviews posted for Clerks II, 3 use the word SCABROUS. A word I have yet to come across until today.

In case there are more reviews up before you check this out the offenders are:

Justin Chang - Variety.com
Damon Wise - Empire Magazine
Emanuel Levy - Emanuellevy.com

I know this practice occurs in music reviews as well, where you see re-phrasing of elements of a band or CD that seem to come up again and again. It helps pigeonhole bands!

Lazy bastards, either that or they all have the same word-of-the-day desk calendar.

The Amazing Screw-On Head

Watch the entire pilot (first episode) of The Amazing Screw-On Head online. It's based on Mike Mignola's (Creator of Hellboy)comic featuring the voice work of Paul Giamatti, David Hyde Pierce and Patton Oswalt.

In this hilarious send-up of Lovecraftian horror and steampunk adventure, President Abraham Lincoln's top spy is a bodyless head known only as Screw-On Head.
When arch-fiend Emperor Zombie steals an artifact that will enable him to threaten all life on Earth, the task of stopping him is assigned to Screw-on Head. Fortunately, Screw-On Head is not alone on this perilous quest. He is aided by his multitalented manservant, Mr. Groin, and by his talking canine cohort, Mr. Dog.

There's also a survey which you can fill out after your done watching to let them know what you thought of it.

Mix CD - Refresher

I know I've gone on about this before but I can't help but bring it up again. With the posting of the new mix CD, Montreal Too Hardcore 4 I thought I should go over the rules that I think everyone should keep in mind when putting a disc together.

Mix CD Rules

1. Never include the same artist more than once - If you're making a greatest hits comp that's fine but why not listen to the CD if you're going to put on 3 of the same artist on the cd.

2. Never use a lead off track as your lead off track - Someone might not know it a mixed CD and people are going to be disappointed if the second track is not the same as the album they have.

3. Don't include songs that reference a year and then say we're going to party like it's that year.

4. Don't include bands that reference themselves in their own songs.

5. If you're going to include a track that's getting played relentlessly on the radio do everyone a favour and find a different version. Either acoustic, live, or remix will do.

Above is the cover art for Season 1 of The Tick on DVD. It's out August 29th.

12 of 13 episodes are going to be on this release, apparently there are some legal concerns about the episode - The Tick vs. The Mole Men which will not be included in this release but hopefully in either of the following 2 seasons.

A Scanner Darkly

A Scanner Darkly opens today in limited release, unfortunately I have to wait until the 28th when it comes to the local art house theater in town.

Set in the near future in Orange County, Calif., the story tracks the intense paranoia felt by users of a mind-altering and horrifically addictive drug called Substance D. A single hit is enough to make an addict for life — a very short life.

YEAH!

Superman Villians That Probably Wont Be In The Sequel

While Superman - Returns only generated $57 million in its opening weekend (a far cry from Spiderman). There will most certainly be a sequel.

A.V. Club highlights some of Superman's less spectacular villians he's faced over the years that probably wont be in the sequel. Included are a short bio, memoriable quote and why it's unlikely to be in the next movie.

Appeared in: Action Comics #396-397 (January-February 1971)

Bio: In this "imaginary" story set in the far-off 1990s, a nearly powerless Superman begs for change in the streets of Metropolis, watching as advances in science fight crime and prevent disaster with an efficiency that he couldn't even hope to achieve.

Memorable quote: "In this computerized, push-button world I'm useless, completely useless! Fit only to be a beggar! It's like a living nightmare!"

Why they're unlikely to make it to the movies: If the Superman franchise were to ditch the action and special effects and opt for an approach inspired by Italian neo-realism, this might work. But probably not.
